What If the Smallest Thing You Give Means Everything to Someone Else?
What began as an unfulfilled 18th birthday wish became a meaningful day of laughter, connection, and compassion for elderly residents at Kanlungan ni Maria.
For many people, turning 18 means celebrating with family, friends, and perhaps a grand debut. But for Elonah, the birthday celebration she had always imagined looked a little different.
Instead of a traditional party, she wanted to spend the occasion giving back to others.

The idea had been close to her heart since junior high school, when she first developed an interest in charitable activities. Although her original birthday plans did not happen as she had hoped, the desire to make a difference never disappeared.
"This was my unfulfilled 18th birthday celebration. Before pa, when I was in junior high school palagi ko na inaeye to involve myself sa mga charitable activities like this. It feels like it has something you can give yourself a purpose and fulfillment," she shared.
That long-held wish eventually brought her to Kanlungan ni Maria, a shelter for elderly residents under the Diocese of Antipolo, where she organized a visit that would leave her with memories and realizations far beyond what she had anticipated.
Finding Purpose in the Simple Act of Giving
Organizing the visit was not without its challenges.
Elonah took on much of the responsibility herself, from planning the activities to preparing the things needed for the occasion. It was a demanding experience, especially for someone arranging a charitable event largely on her own.

"Medyo challenging rin siya on my part kasi halos mag-isa lang ako nag-asikaso like sa planning, sa mga kailangang i-prepare and stuffs like that pero I still managed to do it," she recalled.
Despite the difficulties, she described the experience as deeply fulfilling.
For her, the effort became worthwhile the moment she stepped inside the shelter.
"When I entered the shelter, I really don't know what to feel. Sobra akong masaya to the point na naiyak na ako while observing the elders isa-isa," she shared.
"I cannot control my emotions at that time; hindi ko rin alam kung ano yung nararamdaman ko, halo-halo siya, excitement, happiness, overwhelmed... but one thing's for sure, sobrang genuine ng emotions ko/naming lahat na nandon."
It was a moment filled with emotions she struggled to put into words. There was excitement, happiness, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. More than anything, there was the realization that something she had dreamed of doing for years was finally happening.
The Beauty of Seeing Others Genuinely Happy

Among the activities prepared for the elderly residents was a magic show, made possible through the support of Elonah's cousin, who sponsored the magician for the event.
While the performance entertained the residents, Elonah found herself paying attention to something else: their reactions.
She watched as they smiled, laughed, and responded to the magician's tricks.
"During that moment na i'm just watching them habang nanunuod sila ng magic show (which my cousin sponsored the magician for the event)... I saw them smiling, laughing and reacting every second during the show," she recalled.
"Sobrang priceless 'non, na may isang araw sa buhay nila na sumaya sila dahil sayo."
For Elonah, those smiles became one of the most meaningful parts of her visit.
What might have seemed like an ordinary afternoon of entertainment became a reminder of how much joy a simple gesture could bring.
It wasn't about organizing the biggest event or preparing the most expensive gifts. Sometimes, making someone feel remembered, included, and cared for can already mean so much.
The Stories Behind the Smiles
Beyond the laughter and excitement, the visit also introduced Elonah to the difficult realities some elderly residents face.
One particular story stayed with her.
She learned about a resident who had spent many years working overseas as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) but later returned to the Philippines unable to remember even her own name.
"Most of the elders are having a hard time remembering even their own identities before they came to the shelter. May iba na matagal nang naging OFW, but unfortunately, bumalik siya sa bansa na hindi na maalala even her name," Elonah shared.
Hearing this story was heartbreaking for her, especially when she thought about how much of people's lives is often spent working, building careers, and preparing for the future.
"Sobrang nakakalungkot to know her story that made us realize na while we're building our careers, our lives... sana we still manage to take care of ourselves, to enjoy every moment of it, to embrace whether it is good or bad."
The encounter reminded her that while ambitions and responsibilities are important, taking care of ourselves and appreciating the present should not be forgotten.
It also gave her a deeper appreciation of the experiences, sacrifices, and personal histories that elderly people carry with them.
Behind every resident is a lifetime of memories, relationships, struggles, and experiences, some of which may no longer be easy for them to recall.
You Don't Have to Be Wealthy to Make a Difference
One of Elonah's biggest realizations from the experience was that generosity does not have to come from abundance.
Sometimes, people hesitate to participate in charitable activities because they feel they have too little to offer. But for her, the visit showed that kindness can begin with the simplest gestures.
"I realized that life really humbles us, sometimes the smallest thing that we give to someone is considered a huge one for them," she said.
"Na minsan hindi naman kailangan maging mayaman ka for you to share and make someone else's life worthy of living, kaya mo in the simplest possible way."
Her experience also changed how she looked at everyday challenges.
Spending time with the residents reminded her that life continues through difficult circumstances, and that there is still room to find happiness despite everything people go through.
"You'll get to feel na these people (the elders) have lived their lives for decades now and still continue living and enjoying every moment of it," she explained.
"Ganon rin sa buhay/sa pamilya, despite the challenges that we are dealing with every single day, I hope we still choose to live and endure all those shortcomings kasi eventually we'll get through with it."
It was a lesson in resilience, gratitude, and finding meaning in ordinary moments.
Why Places Like Kanlungan ni Maria Need Community Support
For Elonah, sharing her experience is also an opportunity to bring attention to the needs of Kanlungan ni Maria and the importance of community involvement.
According to her, the shelter is not funded by the government. Instead, it operates under the Diocese of Antipolo and receives support from nongovernmental organizations, private groups, and volunteers.

"KNM is not funded by the government; it is under the Diocese of Antipolo, and they are funded by NGOs, private sectors/group and volunteers," she explained.
"Kaya if there's a chance to visit and choose KNM as beneficiary, sobrang laking tulong nito for them, especially for the elders."
But beyond material donations, she hopes people will recognize the importance of emotional support and human connection.
For elderly residents, having visitors can offer something that money alone cannot provide: companionship and a sense of belonging.
"I hope everyone will be inspired too and try to experience to involve themselves especially those young ones... the elders need affection and the feeling of belongingness," she shared.
"The presence of the visitors can make them feel loved and seen."
Her message is especially directed toward younger people, whom she hopes will become more involved in charitable activities and community initiatives.
An Experience That Changes How You See Life
Elonah believes that visiting places like Kanlungan ni Maria can change more than someone else's day. It can also change the way visitors understand their own lives.
"Doing such an activity can really change your perspective in life. The way you think, the way you count your blessings, the way you see other people's struggles, etc.," she reflected.
"You can learn to be more appreciative and grateful for every grace you have, no matter how small or big it can be. You'll visualize your life the other way around."
For someone considering volunteering or organizing a similar activity, her advice is to approach it with genuine willingness rather than a sense of obligation.
"Do it out of your willingness to help and to extend your support and love to them," she encouraged.
"It has something to do with your purpose in life and something that you can give back from all the blessings you have received. Encourage more friends and loved ones to help and join the activity."
Through her experience, she hopes others will discover their own reasons to give back and perhaps invite their families and friends to take part.
A Birthday Wish That Became Something More
What began as an unfulfilled birthday celebration ultimately became an experience Elonah will continue to carry with her.
She may have arrived hoping to bring happiness to the elderly residents, but she left with something equally meaningful: a renewed appreciation for life, kindness, and the importance of making others feel valued.
Looking back, she hopes her story encourages others to share whatever they can, no matter how small.
"Nothing but I just want to encourage those who will be reading this to share even in the smallest and simplest way. To share their time and support for those who are in need," she said.
"I pray that this kind of charity work continues and inspires other people to get involved and experience this meaningful event through their own initiative."
As she reflects on the experience, one Bible verse continues to hold a special place in her heart.
Proverbs 19:17
"Whoever is kind to the poor will lend to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done."
For Elonah, this visit was never simply about fulfilling a birthday wish. It was about finally doing something she had wanted to do for years, sharing a moment of happiness with others, and discovering how meaningful even the smallest acts of kindness can be.
And perhaps that is what makes her experience worth sharing: a reminder that we don't always need a special occasion, a large budget, or a grand gesture to make someone feel loved.
Sometimes, simply showing up is already a beautiful place to start.
